Parent Coordinator & Decision Maker
High-conflict co-parenting situations can make it difficult for families to implement court orders, communicate effectively, and make timely decisions in the best interests of their children. Parent Coordination (PC) and Decision-Making (DM) services are designed to support families in navigating these challenges with structure, accountability, and a child-focused approach. In Colorado, PC and DM services are typically appointed pursuant to court order under C.R.S. § 14-10-128.1. The scope of services, authority, and duration are outlined in that order.

Parent Coordination (PC)
Parent Coordination is a child-focused alternative dispute resolution process in which a trained mental health or legal professional assists parents in implementing their parenting plan, improving communication, and reducing conflict. The goal of PC services is to help parents move toward more effective co-parenting while minimizing children’s exposure to ongoing conflict.
A Parent Coordinator works with both parties to:
Facilitate productive communication
Clarify and support adherence to court orders
Assist in resolving day-to-day disputes (e.g., scheduling, transitions, extracurricular activities)
Provide education around co-parenting and child development
Identify patterns that may be impacting the children

Decision Making (DM)
Decision-Making services may be court-ordered or agreed upon by the parties when parents are unable to make joint decisions regarding their children. A Decision-Maker is appointed to make specific decisions within the scope defined by the court order. The Decision-Maker reviews information from both parties and relevant professionals, then issues a determination based on the best interests of the child. This helps prevent ongoing disputes from delaying important decisions impacting the child’s well-being.
This may include decisions related to:
Medical care
Mental health treatment
Education
Extracurricular activities
